Life Is a Rollercoaster
Subject line: Life is a rollercoaster 🎢
And you've now got Ronan Keating stuck in your head for the rest of the day... 🎵
Sorry, not sorry 😁
When you're a kid, your path to adulthood seems pretty easy. Finish school, get a good job, get married, buy a house and have kids.
Just like Steven Bartlett, we all want to grow up to be happy, sexy, millionaires.
Simple, right?
Yeah, not so much. You actually grow up. And you realise life isn't as easy as it seemed. Maybe you're still looking for the right partner, or you haven't even got a fraction of your house deposit saved, or you're still working at a job you hate because your business just hasn't taken off yet.
It all starts to feel a bit uncomfortable. And there are a few reasons for this...
The first is cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort a person feels when their behaviour does not align with their values or beliefs. You had beliefs about what your life was going to be like, and it's not living up to them.
And another is the good old comparison game. We see our friends from school getting married and buying houses and we wonder why we're not there yet. We see another designer making 6 figures while our business is scraping by.
So we beat ourselves up. Why aren't we there yet? Why are things so hard?
We forget that success isn't linear. Every single person you see on social media or meet in real life has experienced setbacks and believes they are also behind in one way or another.
Just like Ronan Keating told us all those years ago, life really is a rollercoaster.
We have high points where we're feeling ourselves, everything is going well and we're on our way to success.
Then something happens. A client ghosts you, your Tinder notifications dry up or your car breaks down. Your stomach drops and you feel like you plummeting to the bottom.
But you'll always come back up again.
Believe it or not, we need these 'down' moments. They teach us the lessons we need to be more successful than we were before, and they teach us to be grateful for what we have.
We grow into better people every time something unexpected happens.
And just like on a rollercoaster, chances are in the end you'll end up laughing about the times that gave you a bit of a fright.
Remember everyone's ride through life looks different, and you are exactly where you need to be right now.
So buckle in, and enjoy the ride.
Because we're all in it together.
