Diversifying Your Income As A Designer

You're churning out client work and you're making decent money. But... you could be making more - and it's not just from taking on more clients and working more hours.

I have four methods for you to try, to earn more right away.

Better yet, you don't need a massive social media following or a complex setup!

Diversify your services

If you are only offering brand design you could be potentially missing out on £1000s of extra pounds a month!

When a business is launching or rebranding they need more than just good design. They might also need a new website, social media templates and packaging.

Don't worry - I'm not suggesting you spend hours learning all these different skills!

You can outsource these projects to white-label designers or other freelancers.

And take a percentage of the project fee for the referral 💸.

That's more money for you, while also helping a fellow freelancer and strengthening your relationship with your client! It's a win for everybody.

Offer a smaller, cheaper package

Take a look at how you position your services. If you typically offer a large branding package that takes a lot of time and costs a lot of money, why not look at creating an intensive offer?

Try offering a smaller, cheaper package with fewer deliverables with a quicker turnaround time.

This way, you'll have more chances to take on new projects and make more money in less time.

Affiliate marketing

You use software every day in your business - and chances are your clients will use similar ones! So why not make some money by recommending them?

Look at some of the software you already use in your business, for example, I use:

  • Canva for social media post creation

  • ConvertKit for email marketing

  • Notion for business management

  • Wise for taking international payments

  • Squarespace for website creation

Search on Google for their affiliate programmes (e.g. ‘Canva affiliate program’) and simply sign up!

After you have your sign-up links, create a PDF called ‘useful resources’ and include the affiliate links and a brief outline of what each service offers. Then include this in the goodbye packet for every client!

If you're interested in how this might look, take a look at the resources page on my website.

It's not going to earn you lots of money right off the bat, but it's surprising how it builds up over time.

You might even end up being able to pay for your subscriptions using the money earned from their affiliate programmes! Not bad right?

Create a course for your clients

Have you ever thought about using your other skills to help your clients? Take a look at the questions they usually ask you and think about how you may be able to help them.

Maybe they are looking for help with their social media posts. You could create a small course on how to create aesthetic social media posts (you could even include a Canva tutorial and encourage them to sign up using your affiliate link! See how this all fits together 😉).

This can be sold to existing clients as an add-on or to new clients who don't need branding but still need some help with creating social media posts!

There are lots of ways you can increase your income, you just need to get creative!
